Bridge Structure and History

Facts regarding Canford Bridge and Flood Arches.

  • Canford Main bridge comprises three arches built of Portland limestone.
  • The bridge was completed in 1813.
  • The bridge is jointly owned by Dorset County Council and Borough of Poole and is Grade II listed.
  • Canford Flood Arches comprise six arches built of Portland and Purbeck limestone and Greensand sandstone.
  • The parapets are constructed of red brickwork.
  • The structure was constructed around 1675.
  • The footway on the west of the bridges was added in 1964.
  • It is constructed of reinforced concrete planks supported on steel beams embedded in the bridges.
  • The footway is also covered by the Grade II listing.
