29 Apr 08Successful Prosecution of Counterfeit DVD Door to Door Seller
A Bournemouth man has been successfully prosecuted by the Borough of Poole's Trading Standards team for selling counterfeit "cinema release" DVDs and unclassified pornographic DVDs in Poole.
On Thursday 24th April 2008 Xiau Huang Lin pleaded guilty at Bournemouth Magistrates Court for possessing 293 illegal DVDs and given 12 months conditional discharge.
The Trading Standards team became aware of Lin's illegal selling after a member of public alerted the police on Wednesday 23rd April. The DVDs had a very poor picture quality making viewing difficult and in some cases impossible and were packaged in a thin cellophane wallet with a poor quality film cover.
The sale of counterfeit and unclassified DVDs is an increasing problem in Poole. Offenders are travelling to the area to ply their trade in and around industrial estates and factories and more recently door-to-door in residential areas.
Shaun Robson, Head of Environmental & Consumer Protection Services at Borough of Poole said: "Selling counterfeit and unclassified DVDs is not only illegal but can also have a detrimental affect on the local economy, depriving honest traders of legitimate revenue. We urge the people of Poole to help us stamp out this criminal activity by not purchasing illegal DVDs and reporting any suspected activity such as this as quickly as possible".
