13 Dec 04Alcohol Free Zone Comes Into Force
The first ever Order declaring an alcohol free zone in Poole comes into force today at Branksome Recreation Ground and surrounding roads.
The Borough of Poole introduced a Designation Order banning alcohol from the Branksome Rec area following problems identified by the Police involving drinkers in and around the area. The Order gives Police additional powers where they reasonably believe that a person is, or has been, consuming intoxicating liquor in a designated place. It allows a Police officer to confiscate any alcohol or any open container that appears to contain booze.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "This sends out a powerful message that anti-social behaviour of any kind but especially when fuelled through the consumption of booze will not be tolerated at Branksome Recreation Ground. By making the area an alcohol free zone the Council are working in conjunction with the police for the benefit of local residents."
This is the first of three orders to be introduced. Other areas currently being considered are the Waterloo Estate, including Milne Road, Marshal Road and the Parade, and parts of the town centre including the High Street, Hill Street and Kingland Road. If these orders prove successful, more sites will be considered in the future.
