Finding The Future Of Special Needs Provision

Poole's Pupil & Parent Support Services have recently completed a review of special school provision in the borough.

Following extensive consultation with Headteachers, Governors and parents, the next stage in the process is to explore how best the needs of Poole SEN children can be met.

Vicki Wales, Acting Head of Pupil & Parent Support Services, said: "We will be examining different models of SEN provision and considering how best this can be provided in Poole. With special needs education developing and improving all the time it is important that we consider how all of our pupils are best served.

She added: "It is also essential that special needs schools maintain and improve their links with mainstream schools to ensure that all aspects of education are available to everyone. This could mean that specialist, campus-style settings be developed that would offer a wide range of services and strong links to mainstream education. All interested parties will have the opportunity to participate in discussion around planning for SEN provision in Poole and we will be taking into account the proposals set out in the recent Government Paper 'Every Child Matters'."

Councillor Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Education, said: "This planning is essential to help ensure that we are providing the best possible education in our special needs schools. There are some exciting possibilities ahead which will be carefully considered and we will continue to involve parents and other interested parties as we develop plans for the future."
