14 Aug 98EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVE IN POOLE
The Borough of Poole has launched a number of initiatives to improve education for Post-16 Students. Two bids have been made to the government for funding to improve collaborative across the schools and Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education. The first bid would raise £10,000 to enable more joint courses and provision across schools and The College. The second bid is for £385,000 and would link schools, adult education centres and The College through the Internet. This link would enable resources, and staffing to be shared across institutions. Video conferencing is also envisaged so that, for example, students could talk to their tutors in a different location.
The Borough has also recently established a new Poole LEA/College Working Group to plan a programme of joint working. Headteachers, LEA staff and senior college staff have already started planning developments in in-service courses for teachers, revision courses for students and increased opportunities for parenting work.
From the Autumn, there will also be a new Post 16 Strategic forum established. This will enable the headteachers of Poole, Principal of the College and Senior LEA Officers to plan together future provision.
Councillor Annette Brooke, Chairman of the Education Committee in Poole said "I am delighted that these developments for our older students are taking place. The provision for Post-16 students across Poole is impressive. It is important that this vast range of opportunities is communicated to all and further extended, as resources allow".
Jeff Hart, Head of School Advice and Support Service, added, "The Borough enjoys an excellent relationship with The College. These initiatives are only possible because schools, The College and the local education authority work well together. I look forward to the benefits for students in Poole that such developments bring".
