19 Aug 98POOLE'S STILL BLOOMING
Poole has been named runner-up in the 1998 Southern England in Bloom competition. The Borough was pipped at the post once more by Rushmoor in Hampshire, whose entry was a partnership with the Aldershot Army garrison.
Poole did well to come second, despite losing its major sponsors at the beginning of the year and having to postpone its Garden of the Year Competition as a result.
The town achieved its highest ever score -- 226 out of 250 - which was higher than some of the other category winners. This was the fourth highest mark of all the 39 entries in Southern England in Bloom.
The garden at the Poole Hospital Trust Blue Clinic, was highly commended in the Original Initiative Award.
This year's entry was also boosted by the inclusion of the new Tatnam Organic Patch, a volunteer-run organic allotment which is making great progress.
And this year's Poole in Bloom colouring competition for children received a record number of entries thanks to the help of Poole's Education Policy and Planning Unit.
Clive Smith, Parks and Open Spaces Manager, said: "Obviously we are a little disappointed to be in second place again but it's still a great achievement for Poole.
"We aim to find a new sponsor and re-launch the Garden of the Year Competition next year whilst building on this year's successes in the hope of doing even better."
