25 Aug 98POOLE'S LOCAL PLAN IS ADOPTED FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Poole Local Plan, which sets out the policies and proposals for development of land in Poole to 2001, has been officially adopted. The Plan, which has had regard to issues in the new Dorset county structure plan (end date 2011), embraces current government thinking on sustainable development and integrated transport systems.
It is the first statutorily adopted Borough-wide plan produced by the Council and supersedes previous area local plans for Broadstone-Creekmoor, Town Centre and the Poole coastal area.
It sets out the planning and transportation policies of the Council within a framework for sustainable development.
The Plan includes a tightly drawn Green Belt Boundary to help protect open spaces. It also promotes development in local centres around the Borough to encourage the use of public transport and limit the need to travel.
Higher densities and mixed development are promoted to encourage best use of urban land, but not at the expense of the urban environment.
The Plan also looks to resist the loss of employment land and therefore encourage a varied local economy, including promoting the Port.
Housing policies aim to meet Poole's housing needs including appropriate levels of affordable housing. New residential development will be expected to contribute towards the provision of open space and recreation facilities.
The Town Centre and Quay, seen as the "heart" of Poole, are supported by policies which aim to continue their development while attempting to reduce pollution and congestion.
Land adjoining the Dolphin Centre is identified for expansion of the shopping centre while policies for the High Street are designed to support its vitality and viability.
Cllr Jeff Allen, Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee, said: "Poole Local Plan provides a reference for businesses, the development industry and the public and clearly illustrates the direction of future planning in the Borough of Poole."
