7 Dec 05Ongoing Incident in Hamworthy.
A number of contingency arrangements have been put in place by the Borough of Poole as a result of the ongoing incident in Hamworthy.
Dorset Fire and Rescue continue to remain at the scene of a fire at a garage at the Turlin Moor end of Blandford Road. As the fire involves a gas cylinder which poses a risk of explosion a 200m cordon remains in place while the site is made safe.
A total of 60 homes were evacuated by Dorset Police last night and 45 residents including young children and a number of pets were taken to a rest centre set up by the Council at Rockley Park and later transferred to budget hotel accommodation in the town.
Arrangements have been made for them to stay a second night in accommodation as the cordon is unlikely to be lifted before 9pm at the earliest. Social services have been taking care of any specific needs raised by those people evacuated.
In the meantime Blandford Road remains closed to through traffic and only those living in Upper or Lower Hamworthy should attempt to travel to the area. Signs have been put up in the town centre to alert traffic arriving via Poole Port and other areas that Blandford Road in the area is closed at Turlin Moor lights and that they should travel via Holes Bay Road and the Upton bypass.
