Poole's Good Practice a Prime Example

The Borough of Poole has been singled out as an example of good practice in the relationship between independent and maintained schools in the Borough.

Stephen Timms, Schools Minister, announced that partnerships between state and independent schools were to receive new funding of £800,000 to help raise achievements and widen opportunities for pupils.

He stated that Poole LEA had been successful in "…setting up partnerships involving two independent schools and eight maintained schools" and he added that: "As well as reporting an immediate rise in the confidence and commitment of pupils: teachers involved said they had benefited from discussions and the exchange of ideas with colleagues."

Councillor Brian Clements, Executive spokesperson for education, said: "It is pleasing that the Minister has singled out Poole LEA for praise. This is part of our continuing drive to raise standards as reflected in our very good GCSE results and our willingness to share good practice and facilities across the state and independent sectors."

Last year's initiative culminated in June when over 200 talented Poole students showcased their work at Poole Arts Centre in a lively evening of the arts and mathematics.

Jeff Hart, Chief Adviser for the Borough of Poole, said: "I am very enthusiastic about this initiative and last years event gave students across Poole a unique opportunity to develop their talents in a collaborative way. Joint use of facilities and resources between those schools maintained by the LEA and independent schools in the Borough has great benefits."
