2 Dec 03Poole's Guildhall
Time is nearly up for interested parties to submit proposals for the future of one of Poole's most unique buildings - the Guildhall. Situated in the Old Town Conservation Area, this building is part of Poole's heritage. The Council aims to bring it back into positive use and is currently receiving proposals.
Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Local Economy, said: "The Guildhall is an extremely important building for Poole and we look forward to receiving proposals for its future use. It is important that we protect the Guildhall as one of Poole historic assets and although it has been underused for the past few years, I look forward to seeing it restored and opened for the benefit of our town and for local people and visitors to enjoy."
The Borough of Poole has so far received a lot of interest in the Guildhall and has sent out the property details to a number of interested parties. All detailed proposals submitted will be considered in the New Year. Proposals are invited from the private sector, community and cultural groups and will be considered against a strict criteria ensuring:
- Respect for the dignity and fabric of the building is maintained
- Quality
- It is an asset to the Town Centre
- The use will give opportunities for public access
- The upgrading of the facilities in the building including provision for access by people with disabilities
- Flexibility of design
- Long-term viability
Possible uses vary from a gallery or museum to a civic marriage venue and it has been made clear that any proposed use as a public house, night-club or similar use will not be acceptable.
The closing date for detailed proposals to be submitted is Friday December 19 2003.
