Housing

£62m (21%)
The Council manages a housing stock of 5200 homes and carries out improvements under the Decent Homes programme the cost of which is fully funded from rents. The Government provides £41 million for housing benefits. Providing advice and support to help people keep their home or find another one as well as working with registered social landlords to build new homes are additional services within the Council's housing budget.
Cultural & related services

£11m (4%)
Managing 3 miles of beaches, 1067 Hectares of open spaces, 46 outdoor play areas, Upton House, three leisure centres, an outdoor education centre, Active Healthlink, sports development and exercise referral, crematorium and cemeteries, 10 libraries and a mobile library, 2 museums and arts development.
Education

£103m (35%)
29 primary & middle schools, 8 secondary schools, 3 special needs schools, 935 teachers, over 17,000 pupils, 64 preschools & day nurseries and 10 youth centres.
Highways and Transportation

£21m (8%)
Supporting the local economy, managing transportation planning & development services. Maintenance of 560km of highway, 72km of cycleways, 20,000 streetlights, bridges and structures as well as subsidies for public transport and concessionary fares, car parks and parking enforcement.
Other Services

£18m (6%)
Financial services, communications and customer services, local democracy, legal & land charges and personnel are among services provided.
Environmental & Consumer Protection

£17m (6%)
97,800 tonnes of waste disposed of annually. 19,374 waste bins collected per day. 300 miles of streets cleaned regularly. Litter and dog fouling law enforced. Recycling encouraged, air quality monitored, nuisances investigated, licensed premises regulated. Protection against unsafe workplaces, unsafe food, underage sales, rogue traders and dangerous dogs. Just some of the activities funded from this budget.
Social Services

£59m (20%)
We provide community based services to 4226 older people with a range of support facilities to enable them to continue living independently in their own homes. We also support 1822 adults and deliver services to 1800 vulnerable children and young people.
